Privateers: The Mission: To study and understand the Naval Arts & Sciences from the 16th and 17th Centuries. However, not just in the "textbook" application of study, but through living recreation of the naval arts & crafts, boat building, sailing, and sword fighting.; To attend gatherings and events to share our knowledge with a fellowship of others, entertain and most importantly to have fun while doing so!! Our goal: To become an integral part of community events, not just in our own neighborhood but abroad; To delight and encourage active participation in maritime arts; To engage in Carta Caritatis (the Character of Charity) and help the community (children's charities, food bank, hospital) whenever possible.
Membership: Membership is free and anyone is welcome to join our merry band, including families. Although we are based in Kelowna, B.C., through the power of the internet, you can be a member of the Beer Bard's anywhere in the world!! The Beer Bard's is for anyone who wishes to relive the "age of discovery", who dreams of treasures to be won & strange lands to be found. It was a time when the "tall ships" ruled the economy of nations, and one could rise above the ranks by commanding or being a part of a private commissioned vessel. Come aboard!!! "All I ask'', wrote poet John Masefield, "is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.'' To get started, you will need to first determine what kind of privateer/pirate?? you wish to be, and the time period from which to base your persona. The Beer Bard's focus on the 16th and 17th Centuries, but other time periods are acceptable. Next, think about a name for your character. As time permits, you may want to develop a "period costume" so you can attend events. To get some ideas, look through our pages to either make or purchase a costume or or discuss costuming ideas in the forum. If you live far away you can still participate by sharing your ideas and knowledge in the Forums section, or via email to other members. You can attend or organize your own functions, as well as events held by historical reenactment groups in your area. If you live in the Kelowna area you are most welcome to attend meetings and information sessions in person.
Get Aboard With Our Merry Band! You can start by joining our forums, where we have a small calendar of events. Periodically we will send information about coming events in your area as well as information on meeting times & places in Kelowna, B.C. Or drop us a line: bbprivateer@primus.ca There will be events, classes and learning sessions. Sharing of ideas and information is encouraged, and the internet is an excellent medium to distribute ideas globally. We hope to see you in our fleet!!!
