The Mini-Brigantine/Galleon Project
Carbide Cannon Construction
What would a Brigantine be without
cannons?
The mini-brigantine's feature four carbide based
cannons. The reason for using carbide is that it is relatively safe and easily
handled. It will not explode during transport, cannot be ignited by the hottest
flame (eg. no accidental flame ups), it is cheap, and easy to
obtain.
Also, carbide has reduced barrel pressures than black powder. As
result, lighter and more inexpensive materials can be used to create a basic
cannon. Furthermore, if the barrel were to explode the debris is
less likely to cause harm than a barrel failure with blackpowder, in
otherwords flying or shredded plastic is safer than flying pieces of
metal.
For many years, carbide has been used in children's toy cannons,
with the largest name in America being the "Big Bang" cannon. Originally,
patented in July, 1917, Big Bang cannons have provided years and years of
enjoyment for several generations. Today you can do a search on E-Bay and buy
and either a used "Big Bang" cannon or purchase a replica. A great source of Big
Bang Cannons & supplies is Roy's Big BangŪ Cannons and of course, Big Bang
Cannons
Carbide cannons provide a loud explosive sound, and
a small flash. However, unlike black powder, carbide produces very little
smoke.
The Disclaimer
By making a carbide cannon using the methods contained
herein, you agree to hold harmless the author for any damages caused by the use
and/or misuse of the device. There are no warranties expressed or implied that
the cannon is fit for any purpose. By proceeding to build such a cannon you
do so at your own risk.
Safety First!
It is important to
take all necessary safety precautions when building or firing a carbide cannon.
These cannons produce a very loud sound and some precautions should be taken
when handling carbide. Here are some basic safety tips:
1.)
Wear proper eye and ear protection.
2.) Never EVER look into the muzzle of
any cannon at any time.
3.) Never shoot any cannon close to the ear.
4.)
Carbide warnings: Carbide cannot be ignited by the hottest flame, nor can
it be set off by concussion or hammering the grains. However, carbide can be
caustic and may cause skin and eye irritation. It should never be swallowed. Try
to avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of contact flush throughly
with water. If swallowed give milk or water, followed by citrus juice or diluted
vinegar. Seek medical attention immediately.
5.) Carbide cannons should not
be operated by minors without proper adult supervision.
6.) NEVER shoot a
carbide cannon INDOORS.
